Re: MIFDI

Dear Mr. Aubert:

Governor Jane Swift has asked me to respond to your correspondence of April 24, 2001 on her behalf, and to thank you for your input.

The governor is pleased to learn of the support of the Massachusetts Institute of Fire Department Instructors for the Department of Fire Services Stow facility expansion project.  Governor Swift believes that this facility upgrade is vital to the continuation of excellent service to the firefighters of the cities, towns and fire districts of the Commonwealth.  Additionally she believes this upgrade will provide a clear statement to the fire service and the citizens of the Commonwealth that fire safety is an important aspect of this governor's administration.

To this end, Governor Swift has filed a bill in the legislature titled "An Act Providing for Capital Facility Improvements and Repairs for the Commonwealth."  In this bill there is \$25 million for expansion of the DFS-Stow facility as well as \$7.5 million for repair and upgrade of the facilities and equipment of the Department of Fire Services.

This initiative will now be debated by the legislature in the upcoming months.  The Governor encourages the members of the Massachusetts Institute of Fire Department Instructors to express their support for this initiative to their representatives and senators to ensure the passage of this important legislation.

Thank you, and the members of the Massachusetts Institute of Fire Department Instructors for taking an active role in promoting public safety in the Commonwealth.

Very truly yours,

Stephen D. Coan
State Fire Marshal
